do interviewers actually notice when you ask about their day back, or does it come off as filler

Had an interviewer ask how my week was going and I actually asked the question back instead of just answering and moving on. Felt like a small risk in the moment, like it might read as stalling before the real questions started. She answered for a solid minute about a deadline they were under, and the whole rest of the conversation felt noticeably less stiff after that. Not sure if that's generalizable or just a good match, but I'm doing it again.
