sent a genuinely curious question to someone on a team I wanted to join instead of asking for a referral outright and they offered one unprompted

Asked about a specific technical decision I'd seen mentioned in a conference talk, not about the job at all. We ended up on a call about the actual topic and near the end they asked if I wanted them to flag my resume internally. Leading with real curiosity seems to land better than leading with the ask.

AnonymousAnon Saving this thread. I've been writing outreach messages that all sound like the referral is the only reason I'm messaging. Going to try leading with an actual question about their work instead of asking for anything.

AnonymousAnon What was the conference talk about, if you don't mind sharing? Trying to figure out how to find similar in points.

AnonymousAnon This matches what worked for me too, leading with the ask always felt transactional and got ignored more.
